We have used Ubuntu 18.04 to create this guide.

1. Open Terminal and type these three commands one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nm-l2tp/network-manager-l2tp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install network-manager-l2tp-gnome

2. Close the terminal and click on the "Network Manager" icon at the top right.

3. Go to "Wired Connected" and then "Wired Settings".

4. Click the "+" button in front of "VPN" and choose Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP).

5. In the "Name" field you can put any name like "Cienen".

6. In the "Gateway" field enter the VPN server address.

7. Enter your VPN account username and password in the related fields. (There is a black and white icon in the "Password" field. Click on that and you will see options to save your password.)

8. Click on the "IPsec Settings..." button.

9. Check "Enable IPsec tunnel to L2TP host".

10. Enter the Pre-Shared key in the related field.

11. Click on the "Advanced" bold text and enter these details:

Phase1 Algorithms: 3des-sha1-modp1024
Phase2 Algorithms: 3des-sha1

12. Click "OK" and then click the green "Add" button at the top of the window.

13. Now you will see the VPN connection listed in the Network panel and you can easily use the switch button to connect. You can also connect through the "Network Manager" icon at the top right of your desktop.
